Anjeer-badam milk — a calcium-rich fig and almond bedtime cup (2–5 years)

A naturally sweet, calcium-rich bedtime cup for growing bones — warm fig-and-almond milk, a calm close to the day.

Why am I making this?

Figs, almonds and milk together make one of the gentlest calcium-rich drinks for bones. The classical texts hold dugdha (दुग्ध, milk) and sneha (स्नेह, wholesome fats from nuts) to be nourishing and strengthening, and sweet dried fruits to be building for the body. Figs add calcium, iron and fibre, almonds add calcium and healthy fat, and milk anchors it all. Served warm at bedtime, it supports overnight bone growth while the soothing ritual of warm milk eases a child to sleep.

Ancient text

Milk and wholesome nut-fats are nourishing and strengthening, and sweet dried fruits build the body.

The classical texts hold dugdha (milk) and sneha (wholesome fats, as from almonds) to be nourishing and strengthening, with sweet dried fruits valued as body-building. A fig-and-almond milk reflects that combining of milk, good fats and sweet fruit for gentle, building nourishment.

Modern research

Almonds and figs add calcium (plus healthy fats, iron and fibre) to calcium-rich milk, supporting the higher calcium needs of bone-building years; warm milk also supports a calming bedtime routine.

How to make it

Anjeer (fig) and badam (almond) blended into warm milk make a naturally sweet, creamy bedtime drink that's quietly rich in calcium for growing bones. It's the kind of comforting cup that doubles as a calm close to the day.

What you'll need

  • 2 soft dried figs (anjeer), soaked
  • 4–5 almonds, soaked and finely ground (or 1 tsp smooth almond butter)
  • ¾ cup milk
  • A pinch of cardamom

How to make it

  1. Soak the figs and almonds; peel the almonds if you like a smoother drink.
  2. Blend with the milk and cardamom until smooth and creamy.
  3. Warm gently and serve as part of the bedtime routine.

Grind the almonds very fine, or use smooth almond butter — never whole nut pieces for little ones.

What every mother asks

Are nuts safe at bedtime for a toddler?
Only as very finely ground almond or smooth almond butter — never whole pieces; introduce with care if new.
Won't figs be too sweet?
Their sweetness is natural and comes with fibre and minerals; no added sugar is needed.
Can I skip soaking?
Soaking softens figs and almonds so they blend smooth and digest easily — worth the few minutes.

A few honest notes

  • Whole nuts are a choking hazard — use only very finely ground almond or smooth almond butter; introduce nuts with care and consult your doctor first if allergy is a concern.
  • Use whole cow's milk from one year; ensure dairy is tolerated; serve warm, never hot.
  • Check soaked figs for any hard bits; serve fresh with supervision.
  • If you have bone, growth or allergy concerns, consult your paediatrician — we walk beside the doctor's care, never in its place.

Storage & make-ahead

Best made fresh and served warm. Soak figs and almonds ahead to save time. If needed, refrigerate the blended milk briefly and rewarm once gently, re-testing the temperature before serving.
