Avocado-banana milkshake — ultra-creamy healthy-fat calories (2–5 years)

One of the most healthy-fat-rich foods in an ultra-creamy shake — avocado with banana and milk, wonderful for healthy gain, best at breakfast.

Why am I making this?

Avocado is unusually rich in healthy monounsaturated fat, which makes it one of the best foods for adding calories gently. The classical texts hold sneha (स्नेह), the wholesome fats, to nourish and strengthen the body; while avocado is a newer arrival to Indian kitchens, it sits naturally within that valuing of nourishing fats. Blended with sweet banana and milk, it becomes an ultra-creamy, mild shake. Offered at breakfast or as a snack, its good fats and energy support healthy gain — a recipe that serves families at home and across the diaspora.

Ancient text

Wholesome fats nourish and strengthen the body.

The classical texts hold sneha — wholesome fats — to be nourishing and strengthening for the body. Avocado is a newer arrival to Indian kitchens, so we place an avocado-banana shake within that principle of nourishing fats rather than citing a specific classical verse.

On the classical principle of sneha (wholesome fats) as nourishing — avocado is a later-arriving food placed within that idea, not a cited text. Reviewed by the Aayu Ahaar editorial team.

Modern research

Avocado is energy-dense and rich in healthy monounsaturated fats, fibre and potassium; blended with banana and whole milk it adds calories and good fats efficiently for healthy weight gain.

How to make it

Avocado is one of the most healthy-fat-rich foods a child can eat, and blended with ripe banana and milk it makes an ultra-creamy, mild shake that's wonderful for healthy gain. Naturally buttery and gently sweet, it's a favourite for Indian families at home and abroad.

What you'll need

  • ¼ ripe avocado
  • 1 small ripe banana
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • A few drops of lemon and a pinch of cardamom

How to make it

  1. Scoop the ripe avocado and blend with the banana and milk until silky.
  2. Add a few drops of lemon (keeps the colour fresh) and a pinch of cardamom.
  3. Serve fresh at breakfast or as a snack.

Use a properly ripe, soft avocado for the creamiest, mildest result.

What every mother asks

Avocado isn't traditional — is that okay?
It's a wonderfully nourishing fruit; we're honest that it's a newer arrival and place it within the classical idea of healthy fats.
Will it help her gain?
Avocado's good fats plus milk are genuinely calorie-dense and support gain when offered consistently — no food guarantees it, and your doctor's checks matter most.
My child dislikes the colour/taste.
Ripe banana and a few drops of lemon keep it mild and fresh; start with a little avocado and build up.

A few honest notes

  • Use a properly ripe, soft avocado and blend smooth; introduce on its own first if new; serve fresh with supervision.
  • Use whole cow's milk from one year; ensure dairy is tolerated; no added sugar needed.
  • Keep it between meals so it adds to, not replaces, solids.
  • If your child isn't gaining weight despite eating, consult your paediatrician — we walk beside the doctor's care, never in its place.

Storage & make-ahead

Best fresh — avocado browns within the hour once cut, so make to order and the lemon helps. Use the rest of the avocado promptly in food. Not suitable for storing or freezing as a drink.
