Cashew-date shake — buttery, calorie-dense and naturally sweet (1–2 years)
Buttery, calorie-dense and naturally sweet — cashews ground into a date milkshake, an easy way to add healthy fats and energy.
Why am I making this?
Cashews are among the creamiest, most calorie-dense nuts, which makes them a kind ally for healthy gain. The classical texts hold sneha (स्नेह) — wholesome fats, and the love with which food is given — to nourish and strengthen the body. Ground fine and blended with naturally sweet dates and protein-rich milk, cashew becomes a buttery, mild shake. Offered mid-morning between meals, the healthy fats and energy add concentrated calories that help a slow-to-gain toddler along, gently and deliciously.
Ancient text
Wholesome fats, given with care, nourish and strengthen the body.
The classical texts hold sneha — wholesome fats, as from nuts, and the affection with which food is offered — to be nourishing and strengthening for the body. A cashew-date milkshake reflects that valuing of good fats, with sweet fruit and milk, as building nourishment.

Modern research
Cashews are energy-dense with healthy fats, protein and minerals; ground into milk with dates they raise calories and nutrients efficiently, supporting catch-up growth in toddlers.

How to make it
Cashews are wonderfully rich and creamy, and ground into a date-sweetened milkshake they make a buttery, calorie-dense drink toddlers love. Soft, mild and naturally sweet, it's an easy way to add healthy fats and energy.
What you'll need
- 5–6 cashews, soaked and finely ground (or 1 tsp smooth cashew paste)
- 2 soft pitted dates, soaked
- ¾ cup whole milk
- A pinch of cardamom
How to make it
- Soak the cashews and grind to a smooth paste.
- Blend with the soaked dates, milk and cardamom until creamy.
- Serve fresh, mid-morning, between meals.
Grind the cashews very fine — smooth, never gritty or in pieces, for little ones.
How to feed it
| Best time | mid-morning, between meals |
| Why then | concentrated, healthy-fat calories top up the day without spoiling the next meal |
| Form | cashews finely ground or as smooth paste; blended creamy |
| Portion | a small glass; an add-on, not a meal replacement |
What's inside
Grow this recipe with your child
| Under 1 | a little smooth cashew paste in food with her usual milk, if nuts tolerated; not a cow's-milk drink |
| 1–2y | a small cashew-date milkshake with very finely ground cashew |
| 2–5y | a fuller shake; can add a few other ground nuts |
| 5y+ | a thicker shake as a filling snack |
What every mother asks
Are cashews safe for a toddler?
Will it help her gain?
Can I add sugar?
A few honest notes
- Whole nuts are a choking hazard — use only very finely ground cashew or smooth paste; introduce nuts with care and consult your doctor first if allergy is a concern.
- Use whole cow's milk from one year; ensure dairy is tolerated; soak and check dates for pit pieces.
- Serve fresh with supervision; keep it between meals so it adds to, not replaces, solids.
- If your child isn't gaining weight despite eating, consult your paediatrician — we walk beside the doctor's care, never in its place.
Storage & make-ahead
Best fresh. Soaked, ground cashew paste keeps refrigerated for a day or two (nuts can turn, so use promptly). Blend the shake to order and serve within a few minutes.
