Coconut-rice kheer drink — creamy, festive-tasting calories to sip (1–2 years)
Comfort in a cup — a drinkable coconut-rice kheer, creamy and calorie-rich, a gentle festive-tasting energy sip.
Why am I making this?
Rice, milk and coconut together make a naturally rich, calorie-dense comfort drink. The classical texts hold narikela (नारिकेल, coconut) to be sweet, nourishing and strengthening, and milk-and-rice preparations to be wholesome and building for the body. A thin, blended kheer keeps it gentle and sippable for a toddler. Offered mid-morning between meals, the coconut's good fats with rice and milk add concentrated energy and a festive sweetness children love — nourishment that feels like a treat.
Ancient text
Coconut is sweet, nourishing and strengthening, and milk-and-rice preparations are wholesome and building.
The classical texts hold narikela (coconut) to be sweet, nourishing and strengthening, and milk-and-rice preparations to be wholesome and building for the body. A coconut-rice kheer reflects that valuing of coconut, rice and milk together as rich, building nourishment.

Modern research
Coconut adds energy-dense healthy fats; with rice and whole milk it forms a calorie- and protein-rich drink that helps toddlers meet energy needs for healthy weight gain.

How to make it
A thin, drinkable coconut-rice kheer is comfort in a cup — soft cooked rice simmered in milk with a little grated coconut and jaggery, then loosened to sip. Creamy, fragrant and calorie-rich, it's a gentle, festive-tasting way to add energy.
What you'll need
- 2 tbsp cooked soft rice
- ¾ cup whole milk
- 1 tbsp fresh grated coconut
- ½ tsp jaggery, to taste, and a pinch of cardamom
How to make it
- Simmer the cooked rice and grated coconut in the milk until soft and creamy.
- Sweeten lightly with jaggery, add cardamom, and blend smooth.
- Loosen to a sippable kheer, cool to warm, and serve mid-morning.
Blend it smooth and keep it pourable — a drinkable kheer, not a thick pudding.
How to feed it

| Why then | rich calories top up the day without crowding the next meal |
| Form | blended smooth and pourable; a drinkable kheer |

What every mother asks
Is coconut heavy for a toddler?
Will it help her gain?
Can I use coconut milk instead?
A few honest notes
- Blend smooth so there are no coconut shreds to choke on; serve warm, never hot, with supervision.
- Use whole cow's milk from one year; ensure dairy is tolerated; jaggery only from one year.
- Keep it between meals so it adds to, not replaces, solids.
- If your child isn't gaining weight despite eating, consult your paediatrician — we walk beside the doctor's care, never in its place.
Storage & make-ahead
Best fresh and warm; it thickens as it sits, so loosen with warm milk when reheating. Keep refrigerated for up to a day and rewarm once, re-testing the temperature. Use fresh coconut for best flavour.
