Drumstick pod & toor dal — a calcium-rich classic for strong bones (1–2 years)

The drumstick pod grandmothers added to dal for strong bones — calcium-rich, and fun for little hands to scrape.

Why am I making this?

The drumstick (sahjan) pod is a quiet bone-builder — a good plant source of calcium that South Indian families have stirred into dal and sambhar for generations. Its soft inner pulp is mild and slightly sweet, and the act of scraping the pod is fun for a toddler, making mealtime playful. With toor dal for protein and rice for energy, it is a wholesome, calcium-aware everyday lunch.

Ancient text

The drumstick (shobhanjana) is counted among the wholesome, protective vegetables.

The classical scriptures count the drumstick tree (shobhanjana) among the wholesome, protective vegetables — a long-valued food, here in its tender-pod form for children.

Modern research

Drumstick pods provide plant calcium along with vitamin C and fibre, supporting bone development; toor dal adds protein and iron, and a squeeze of lemon adds vitamin C that aids iron absorption — together a balanced, bone-aware meal.

How to make it

What you'll need

  • 3 tbsp toor dal
  • 2 drumstick pods (sahjan / moringa pods), cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1 tsp ghee, a pinch of cumin, turmeric and a little garlic
  • 1 cup water, a squeeze of lemon at the end
  • Soft rice, to serve
  1. Pressure-cook the toor dal with turmeric, garlic and water until soft, adding the drumstick pieces for the last few minutes so they turn tender.
  2. Show your toddler how to scrape the soft inner pulp from the pod — only the soft inside is eaten, never the fibrous skin.
  3. Mash the dal smooth, temper with ghee and cumin, and serve the scraped pulp stirred into the dal over soft rice.
  4. Cool to warm and finish with a small squeeze of lemon.

What every mother asks

Isn't the drumstick pod fibrous and a choking risk?
The outer pod is fibrous and must never be eaten — only the soft inner pulp is scraped out and stirred into the dal. For a 1–2 year old, you scrape it for them and serve just the pulp.
Will it help bones?
Drumstick pods are a useful plant source of calcium as part of a varied diet — a genuine contributor, alongside dairy, vitamin D and active play, not a single fix.
Where do I find drumsticks?
Fresh in Indian vegetable markets; abroad, in Indian grocers, fresh or frozen.
My child finds it stringy.
Serve only the soft scraped pulp, not the pod itself, and mix it into the dal so the texture is smooth.

A few honest notes

  • Never give the fibrous pod skin — only the soft scraped inner pulp (the skin is a choking risk).
  • For 1–2 year olds, scrape the pod yourself and serve just the pulp in smooth dal.
  • Introduce as a single new food first, with a 3-day gap; add lemon off the heat.
  • Keep salt modest for under-2s.

Storage & make-ahead

The dal keeps covered in the fridge for a day; warm gently with a little water and add fresh lemon at serving. Cook drumstick fresh where possible, as it is best tender and freshly made.

A gentle, honest note — this is one nourishing food among many, not a complete meal on its own. Aayu Ahaar walks beside the doctor's care, never in its place.
