Dry-fruit milk — a calorie-rich cup for healthy weight gain (2–5 years)

A calorie-rich, naturally sweet way to pack in healthy energy for the slow-to-gain child — warm dry-fruit milk, best mid-morning or at bedtime.

Why am I making this?

For a child who needs to gain, calorie-dense food she enjoys is the kindest route — and a warm dry-fruit milk delivers exactly that. The classical texts hold dugdha (milk) enriched with nourishing additions to build bala (बल, the body's strength), and sneha (wholesome nut-fats) to nourish and sustain. Almonds and cashews add healthy fat and protein, dates add energy and iron, and milk anchors it. Offered mid-morning between meals or as a comforting bedtime cup, it tops up calories without piling pressure on mealtimes.

Ancient text

Milk enriched with nourishing foods builds the body's strength, and wholesome nut-fats sustain it.

The classical texts hold dugdha (milk), enriched with nourishing additions, to build bala (strength), and sneha (wholesome fats, as from nuts) to nourish and sustain the body. A dry-fruit milk reflects that valuing of milk enriched with good fats and sweet fruits for building nourishment.

Modern research

Energy-dense additions like ground nuts and dates raise the calories and nutrients of milk efficiently, helping slow-to-gain children meet energy needs; offered between meals it supports catch-up growth without blunting appetite.

How to make it

A warm dry-fruit milk — dates, almond and cashew ground into milk — is a calorie-rich, naturally sweet drink that helps a slow-to-gain child pack in healthy energy. Make a little dry-fruit powder once, and a nourishing cup comes together in minutes.

What you'll need

  • 1 tsp dry-fruit powder (almonds, cashews and dates, roasted and finely ground)
  • 1 soft pitted date, soaked (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • A pinch of cardamom

How to make it

  1. Make a batch of dry-fruit powder by grinding roasted almonds, cashews and dried dates very fine.
  2. Warm the milk, whisk in a teaspoon of the powder and the cardamom until smooth.
  3. Serve warm, mid-morning or at bedtime.

Grind the dry fruits very fine so the milk is smooth — no nut pieces for little ones.

What every mother asks

Are nuts safe here?
Only very finely ground — never whole or in pieces; introduce nuts cautiously and check with your doctor if allergy is a concern.
Won't a rich drink kill her appetite?
Keep it small and between meals (or at bedtime), not right before a meal, so it adds calories rather than replacing food.
Can I add sugar to fatten the drink?
No need — dates sweeten it and the nuts and milk add the calories; skip added sugar.

A few honest notes

  • Whole nuts are a choking hazard — grind dry fruits very fine; introduce nuts with care and consult your doctor first if allergy is a concern.
  • Use whole cow's milk from one year; ensure dairy is tolerated; serve warm, never hot, with supervision.
  • Keep it between meals so it adds to, not replaces, solids; no added sugar.
  • If your child isn't gaining weight despite eating, consult your paediatrician — we walk beside the doctor's care, never in its place.

Storage & make-ahead

The dry-fruit powder keeps in an airtight jar in a cool, dry place for a couple of weeks (refrigerate in humid weather, as nuts can turn). Make the milk fresh each time and warm once before serving.
