Flaxseed & vegetable soft khichdi — gentle omega-3s for a growing brain (1–2 years)
A soft khichdi finished with ground flaxseed — a quiet spoonful of omega-3 for a toddler's busy, growing brain.
Why am I making this?
Flaxseed (alsi) is one of the richest plant sources of omega-3, the fat a toddler's rapidly wiring brain keeps drawing on. Ground fine and stirred into a soft, familiar khichdi, it disappears into a meal a child already trusts — no new flavour to refuse. Moong and rice add gentle protein and energy, and ghee, an unctuous food (sneha) the classical texts prize, carries the goodness. A small, clever upgrade to an everyday bowl.
Ancient text
Flax (atasi) is counted among the unctuous seeds, and ghee among the foremost wholesome fats.
The classical texts list flax (atasi/uma) among the unctuous seeds (sneha) and praise ghrita among the foremost wholesome fats; ground flax in a ghee khichdi follows that thinking. The exact verse is being confirmed by our review panel before publication.

Modern research
Flaxseed is among the richest plant sources of omega-3 (ALA); supplying steady healthy fats supports brain development through the toddler years, especially in largely vegetarian diets.

What every mother asks
Why grind the flaxseed?
Is flax safe for toddlers?
Does it change the taste?
Can I add it daily?
A few honest notes
- Always grind flaxseed fine — whole seeds aren't absorbed and can be a choking risk.
- Stir in just before serving; don't boil hard.
- Introduce in small amounts first.
- Keep salt modest for under-2s.
Storage & make-ahead
Khichdi is best fresh. Grind flax fresh in small batches — ground flax turns rancid quickly, so store any extra airtight in the fridge.
