Makhana-milk shake — a light, protein-rich bedtime drink (2–5 years)
Light-tasting but quietly protein-rich — roasted makhana blended into milk with dates, a gentle, calming bedtime shake.
Why am I making this?
Makhana is light to eat yet surprisingly rich in protein, which makes it a gentle way to build strength without heaviness. The classical texts value wholesome, easily-digested foods that build bala (बल), the body's strength, taken in a form that sits well even on a delicate appetite. Roasted and ground into warm milk with sweet dates, makhana becomes a calm, creamy shake. Offered at bedtime, its steady protein and the warm milk settle a child gently — calories that build quietly through the night's rest.

How to make it
Roasted makhana (foxnuts) blended into warm milk with dates makes a light-tasting but quietly protein-rich shake — gentle on the tummy, naturally sweet, and lovely as a bedtime drink. An easy way to add steady, calm calories.
What you'll need
- 2 tbsp makhana (foxnuts), roasted until crisp
- 2 soft pitted dates, soaked
- ¾ cup whole milk
- A pinch of cardamom
How to make it
- Roast the makhana until crisp, cool, then grind to a fine powder.
- Warm the milk, blend in the makhana powder, soaked dates and cardamom until smooth and creamy.
- Serve warm at bedtime, or cool for mid-morning.
Grind the makhana fully smooth so there are no pieces for little ones.

A few honest notes
- Grind roasted makhana fully smooth — whole or large pieces are a choking hazard; serve warm, never hot, with supervision.
- Use whole cow's milk; ensure dairy is tolerated; check soaked dates for pit pieces.
- Keep it between meals or at bedtime so it adds to, not replaces, solids.
- If your child isn't gaining weight despite eating, consult your paediatrician — we walk beside the doctor's care, never in its place.
Storage & make-ahead
Roast and grind makhana ahead — the powder keeps airtight and dry for a week, making the shake quick to blend. Best served fresh; if needed, refrigerate briefly and re-whisk, as makhana settles.
