Oats, date & milk porridge with ghee — a warm weight-gain breakfast (1–2 years)
Oats slow-cooked in full-fat milk with dates — a warm breakfast that quietly adds the calories the scale is waiting for.
Why am I making this?
Plain oats in water is a light breakfast — fine for an adult watching weight, wrong for a toddler who needs to gain. Cooked in full-fat milk with dates, ghee and a few ground almonds, the same oats become a thick, satisfying bowl rich in calories, protein and good fat. The oats' soft fibre also keeps your child fuller and steadier through the morning.
Ancient text
Milk is among the foremost nourishing, strength-giving foods, and grains cooked in it nourish those who need building up.
The classical texts place milk (kshira) among the foremost nourishing, strength-giving foods and recommend wholesome grains cooked in it for those who need building up. A grain simmered in milk with ghee is that nourishing principle in a morning bowl.

Modern research
Oats give slow-release energy and soluble fibre (beta-glucan); cooking them in full-fat milk with ghee and dates turns a light cereal into a calorie- and protein-dense meal for catch-up growth.

What every mother asks
Aren't oats a 'diet' food that won't help gain?
My toddler finds oats slimy — any fix?
Can I make it ahead?
A few honest notes
- Almonds and dairy are common allergens — introduce each separately first; always grind nuts fine, never serve whole, to avoid choking.
- Use finely chopped soft dates and mash well.
- Serve warm, not hot.

Storage & make-ahead
Keeps in the fridge for up to 2 days in a covered container. It thickens when cold — reheat gently with a splash of warm milk to loosen, and re-check the temperature before serving. Not suitable for freezing.
A gentle, honest note — this is one nourishing food among many, not a complete meal on its own. Aayu Ahaar walks beside the doctor's care, never in its place.
