Peanut-jaggery-banana shake — a calorie powerhouse for healthy gain (2–5 years)

A real calorie powerhouse — roasted peanut, banana and jaggery in a thick malty shake, rich in protein and good fats, best mid-morning or after play.

Why am I making this?

Few drinks pack as many healthy calories per sip as a peanut-banana shake — protein and good fat in a nutty, satisfying form. The classical texts speak of sneha (स्नेह), the wholesome fats that nourish and strengthen; while the peanut reached India in later centuries, it belongs naturally within that valuing of nourishing fats and proteins. Banana adds easy energy and sweetness, jaggery a little more, and milk anchors the protein. Offered mid-morning or after play, it gives concentrated, building calories that help a slow-to-gain child.

Ancient text

Wholesome fats and nourishing foods strengthen and build the body.

The classical texts value sneha — wholesome, nourishing fats — as strengthening and building for the body. The peanut came to Indian kitchens in later centuries, so we place a peanut-banana shake within that principle of nourishing fats and proteins offered with care, rather than citing a specific classical verse.

On the classical principle of sneha (wholesome fats) as nourishing — peanut is a later-arriving food placed within that idea, not a cited text. Reviewed by the Aayu Ahaar editorial team.

Modern research

Peanuts are highly energy-dense with protein and healthy fats; combined with banana and whole milk they make one of the most calorie-efficient drinks for supporting healthy weight gain.

ICMR-NIN, Indian Food Composition Tables (IFCT) 2017 — nutrient values for peanut, banana and milk. IAP and WHO — energy-dense foods for healthy growth and catch-up. LEAP study and allergy guidance — sustained peanut exposure (as smooth butter) in tolerant children.

How to make it

Roasted peanuts, ripe banana and a touch of jaggery blended into milk make a thick, malty shake that's a real calorie powerhouse — rich in protein and good fats, and irresistibly nutty-sweet. Perfect after play, or as a filling mid-morning boost.

What you'll need

  • 1 tbsp roasted peanuts, skins removed and finely ground (or 1 tsp smooth peanut butter)
  • 1 small ripe banana
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • ½ tsp jaggery, optional

How to make it

  1. Grind the roasted peanuts to a smooth powder (or use smooth peanut butter).
  2. Blend with the banana, milk and jaggery until thick and creamy.
  3. Serve fresh, mid-morning or after active play.

Use only smooth ground peanut or peanut butter — never whole nuts — and make sure peanut is already tolerated.

What every mother asks

Peanut is a big allergen — is it safe?
Only give it if peanut is already safely tolerated, always as smooth ground peanut or butter, never whole; if there's any allergy history, check with your doctor first.
Why no classical citation for peanut?
Peanut reached India in later centuries, so we honestly place it within the classical idea of nourishing fats rather than inventing a verse.
Is jaggery necessary?
Just a little for taste; the peanut, banana and milk do the calorie work.

A few honest notes

  • Peanut is a major allergen — give only if already tolerated, as smooth ground peanut or butter, never whole or in pieces; if there's any allergy history, consult your paediatrician before introducing.
  • Use whole cow's milk; ensure dairy is tolerated; blend smooth and serve fresh with supervision.
  • It's filling — keep it between meals so it doesn't replace solids.
  • If your child isn't gaining weight despite eating, consult your paediatrician — we walk beside the doctor's care, never in its place.

Storage & make-ahead

Best fresh — banana shakes brown quickly. Keep roasted peanut powder or smooth peanut butter (unsweetened, unsalted) ready. Blend to order; if needed, refrigerate briefly and stir before serving.
