Ragi-banana porridge drink — a wholesome breakfast for healthy gain (6–12 months)
Steady calories, calcium and iron in one soft drinkable porridge — sprouted ragi with banana, a wholesome breakfast feed.
Why am I making this?
Healthy gain in infancy comes from steady, nutrient-dense feeds, and a ragi-banana porridge is exactly that. The classical texts value wholesome, well-cooked grains — anna (अन्न, nourishing food and grain) — as the foundation of a child's strength, taken soft for easy digestion. Ragi brings calcium and iron, banana adds easy energy and natural sweetness, and her own milk enriches it. Made thick and drinkable at breakfast, it sets up the day with gentle, building nourishment.
Ancient text
Wholesome, well-cooked grains are the foundation of a child's nourishment and strength.
The classical texts hold anna (nourishing food and grain), well-cooked and soft, to be the foundation of nourishment and strength for the young. A soft ragi-banana porridge reflects that valuing of wholesome grain as a building, sustaining food.

Modern research
Cereal-fruit porridges enriched with milk are energy- and micronutrient-dense complementary foods; sprouting ragi improves digestibility and iron availability, supporting healthy infant growth.

How to make it
A soft, drinkable ragi-and-banana porridge is a wholesome way to add steady calories, calcium and iron for a growing baby. Sprouted ragi is gentle on the tummy, banana sweetens it naturally, and her own milk loosens it into a thick, sippable feed.
What you'll need
- 1 tbsp sprouted ragi flour
- ¾ cup water
- ½ small ripe banana, mashed
- Her usual milk (breastmilk/formula) to loosen
How to make it
- Whisk the ragi flour into the water with no lumps, then cook on low, stirring, 4–5 minutes until thick and the raw smell goes.
- Cool to warm, stir in the mashed banana, and loosen with her usual milk to a thick, drinkable porridge.
- Serve fresh and warm, at breakfast.
Cook the ragi well so it's smooth and easy to digest.
How to feed it
| Best time | breakfast / morning |
| Why then | a nutrient-dense start sets up the day's energy and growth |
| Form | thick but drinkable; loosen with her usual milk |
| Portion | a small feed; alongside, not instead of, milk feeds |
What's inside
Grow this recipe with your child
| 6–8m | thin, smooth ragi-banana porridge |
| 8–10m | thicker, with well-mashed banana |
| 10–12m | a spoonable porridge with soft banana pieces |
| 1y+ | ragi-banana with cow's milk, a date and a few ground nuts |
What every mother asks
Is ragi too heavy daily?
Will it help her gain?
Can I use cow's milk?
A few honest notes
- Cook ragi well and keep it smooth; under one year use breastmilk/formula, not cow's milk, to loosen; no honey or sugar.
- Introduce ragi on its own for a few days first to watch for any reaction; serve warm, never hot.
- This is a feed alongside, not a replacement for, milk feeds.
- If your baby isn't gaining along her growth curve, consult your paediatrician — we walk beside the doctor's care, never in its place.
Storage & make-ahead
Best fresh and warm. The cooked ragi base keeps refrigerated for up to a day; reheat with a splash of milk or water and add fresh banana before serving. Keep sprouted ragi flour airtight for quick mornings.
