Sweet potato-milk drink — a naturally sweet calorie feed (6–12 months)
A naturally sweet, calorie-rich velvety drink — steamed sweet potato with her own milk, a gentle mid-morning energy feed.
Why am I making this?
Sweet potato is one of the most naturally energy-rich first foods, which makes it a gentle ally for healthy gain. The classical texts hold the sweet, wholesome roots and tubers — the madhura (मधुर, sweet) taste — to be nourishing, strengthening and easy to take for the young. Steamed soft and blended with her own milk, it becomes a velvety, calorie-rich drink with no added sugar. Offered mid-morning, it tops up energy and brings beta-carotene for eyes and immunity.
Ancient text
Sweet, wholesome roots are nourishing and strengthening, easy to take for the young.
The classical texts hold sweet, wholesome roots and tubers — the madhura (sweet) taste — to be nourishing, strengthening and agreeable to the young. A smooth sweet-potato drink reflects that valuing of sweet, wholesome roots as gentle, building nourishment.

How to make it
Steamed sweet potato blended with her own milk makes a naturally sweet, velvety drink that's quietly calorie-rich — a lovely way to add energy and beta-carotene for a growing baby. Smooth, warming and gently filling, it's an easy mid-morning feed.
What you'll need
- ¼ small sweet potato (shakarkandi), steamed soft
- Her usual milk (breastmilk/formula) to loosen
- A tiny pinch of cardamom (optional)
How to make it
- Steam the sweet potato until very soft and mash or blend smooth.
- Loosen with her usual milk to a thick, sippable drink and add a tiny pinch of cardamom.
- Serve fresh and warm, mid-morning.
Sweet potato's natural sweetness means nothing else is needed — no sugar, no honey.

What every mother asks
Is sweet potato too sugary?
Will it help her gain?
Can I use cow's milk?
A few honest notes
- Steam sweet potato fully and blend smooth; under one year use breastmilk/formula, not cow's milk, to loosen; no honey or sugar.
- Introduce sweet potato on its own first to watch for any reaction; serve warm, never hot.
- This tops up, never replaces, milk feeds.
- If your baby isn't gaining along her growth curve, consult your paediatrician — we walk beside the doctor's care, never in its place.
Storage & make-ahead
Best fresh and warm. Steamed sweet potato keeps refrigerated for up to a day; reheat and blend fresh with her milk before serving. Steam a little extra to save time the next day.
