Walnut, banana & ghee mash — an early brain food (1–2 years)

Walnuts and ghee — gentle, brain-loving fats in a soft, naturally sweet mash a toddler happily takes.

Why am I making this?

The toddler brain is still growing fast and is built largely from fat — so the right fats matter. Walnuts are the richest nut source of plant omega-3, and a little ghee adds the healthy fat growth needs, folded into sweet banana so it goes down without a fuss.

Ancient text

Ghee and rich, nourishing foods are described as supporting both strength and the growing mind.

The classical scriptures describe ghee and certain nourishing foods as supporting strength and the growing intellect — the thinking behind a fat-rich first food for a developing mind.

Modern research

Walnuts are the richest nut source of the plant omega-3 ALA, and the brain is roughly 60% fat by dry weight and grows rapidly through the toddler years, so age-appropriate healthy fats support its development; ghee adds energy-dense fat and banana easily digested energy.

How to make it

What you'll need

  • 2 walnut halves, soaked and ground completely fine
  • 1 small ripe banana, mashed
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 2–3 tbsp warm milk, to loosen (optional)
  • A pinch of cardamom
  1. Soak the walnuts in warm water for 15 minutes, lift off the thin skin if it comes away easily, and grind to a completely fine powder — no coarse pieces.
  2. Mash the banana smooth in a bowl.
  3. Warm the ghee and toast the ground walnut for about 30 seconds until fragrant, then fold it into the banana.
  4. Loosen with a little warm milk to a soft mash, add the cardamom, and serve lukewarm.

Please read the safety notes below — walnuts must be ground completely fine and served seated and supervised.

What every mother asks

Aren't walnuts a choking risk?
Yes if left whole or in pieces — so always grind walnuts completely fine for a toddler, and serve seated and supervised. Never give whole or halved nuts under age 3.
What about nut allergy?
Introduce a tiny amount of walnut first to rule out a reaction. With a family history of nut allergy, check with your paediatrician before giving them.
Will it really help her brain?
It supplies the healthy fats brain growth draws on — but it works as part of a varied diet over time, not as a single magic food.
My toddler won't eat new things.
The banana's sweetness carries the walnut. Offer a small amount calmly beside a familiar food, and try again across several days — it can take 10 to 15 gentle tries.

A few honest notes

  • Choking safety: grind walnuts completely fine — never whole or halved nuts under age 3. Always serve seated and supervised.
  • Introduce a tiny amount first to rule out a nut allergy; with a family history of nut allergy, check with your paediatrician.
  • No honey under 12 months — the banana sweetens it naturally.
  • Serve lukewarm; check the temperature before feeding.

Storage & make-ahead

Best made fresh and served lukewarm, as banana browns and walnut fats turn quickly. If needed, keep covered in the fridge for a few hours; make in small batches.

A gentle, honest note — this is one nourishing food among many, not a complete meal on its own. Aayu Ahaar walks beside the doctor's care, never in its place.
