Anjeer & almond milk soft kheer — a triple-calcium bowl for strong bones (1–2 years)
A creamy anjeer-almond milk kheer — three calcium-givers in one naturally sweet, bone-building bowl.
Why am I making this?
Bones build fastest in early childhood and need a steady stream of calcium to do it. This kheer stacks three sources in one bowl — milk, almonds and dried figs are all meaningful calcium-givers — and the figs make it naturally sweet, so no sugar is needed. Ground silky-smooth, it is gentle on a toddler and feels like a treat, which means it is actually eaten. A small bowl that quietly supports a child's growing frame.
Ancient text
Milk and sweet nourishing nuts are strengthening and building, fit for growth and vigour.
The classical texts hold milk (dugdha) to be among the most nourishing and strengthening foods, and value sweet, nourishing nuts and fruits enriched with healthy fats (sneha) as building to the body. This kheer brings milk, almond and fig together in that strengthening, growth-supporting spirit.
Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana — on milk (dugdha) as nourishing and on nourishing fats (sneha). Almond and fig placed within the principle, not a specific verse. Reviewed by the Aayu Ahaar editorial team.
Modern research
Milk, almonds and dried figs each contribute meaningful calcium, and figs add natural sweetness without added sugar; combined in a smooth kheer, they offer a palatable, multi-source calcium dinner supporting the rapid bone mineralisation of early childhood.

How to make it
This is a little bowl of treasure for growing bones — three calcium-givers in one gentle kheer. Dried figs (anjeer) and almonds, soaked and ground silky-smooth, are simmered into warm milk until naturally sweet and creamy. Figs, almonds and milk each bring calcium to the table, with no sugar needed. Soft, fragrant and comforting, it is the kind of dinner that feels like a dessert and nourishes like a tonic.
What you'll need
- 2 dried figs (anjeer), soaked soft
- 4 almonds, soaked and peeled
- 1/2 cup milk
- A small pinch of cardamom

- Soak the figs and almonds until soft, then blend to a completely smooth paste.
- Simmer the paste with the milk on a low flame, stirring, until thick and creamy.

What every mother asks
Are nuts safe at this age?
Is it too sweet or sugary?
My child won't drink plain milk.
Does it strengthen bones by itself?
A few honest notes
- Grind figs and almonds completely smooth — whole nuts and dried fruit are choking hazards.
- Introduce nuts carefully, one at a time, especially with any family allergy history; no added sugar or honey.
- Use age-appropriate milk and serve lukewarm and smooth.

Storage & make-ahead
Best fresh and warm. Keeps covered in the fridge for up to a day; it thickens on cooling, so reheat with a splash of milk and stir smooth. The soaked fig-almond paste can be made a day ahead and chilled.
