Anjeer & almond milkshake — a naturally sweet weight-gain drink kids ask for again (2–5 years)
Soft figs blended into creamy milk — naturally sweet, calorie-rich, and the drink kids ask for again.
Why am I making this?
For a child who needs to gain but fills up fast, a drink can deliver calories more easily than a plate. Soft anjeer (figs) bring natural sweetness, fibre, calcium and iron; almonds and milk add protein, healthy fat and more calcium. Blended creamy, it tastes like a treat — a calorie-dense glass that a child finishes happily, with no added sugar.
Ancient text
Sweet fruits taken with milk are described as nourishing and body-building.
The classical scriptures describe sweet fruits taken with milk as nourishing and strengthening — the thinking behind a fig-and-milk drink for building healthy weight.

Modern research
Dried figs are energy-dense and a good source of calcium, iron and fibre; with milk and almonds the drink delivers protein, healthy fat and concentrated calories in a small volume — an effective way to add wholesome energy for a child who tires of large meals.

How to make it
What you'll need
- 3 dried figs (anjeer), soaked in warm water 20 minutes
- 1 cup milk
- 4 almonds, soaked and peeled
- 1/4 tsp ghee
- A pinch of cardamom
- Soak the figs and almonds until soft. Reserve the fig soaking water.
- Blend the figs, almonds, milk and cardamom to a smooth, thick shake — the soft figs sweeten it naturally.
- Warm gently with the ghee if your child prefers it warm, or serve at room temperature.
- Serve fresh in a small cup. The natural fig seeds add a pleasant speckle and fibre.

| Texture | Smooth, thick shake; blend well so there are no almond bits |

Will a drink fill her up instead of food?
Are figs too sugary?
Nut allergy?
Fresh or dried figs?
A few honest notes
- Blend smooth so there are no almond or fig pieces (choking); serve in a cup, seated.
- Almonds are a common allergen — introduce a small amount first, or omit; with a family history of allergy, check with your paediatrician.
- Offer between or alongside meals, not in place of a meal.
- If your child is persistently not gaining weight, see your paediatrician.
Storage & make-ahead
Best made fresh and served straight away. If needed, keep in the fridge for a few hours and stir/shake before serving; don't keep milk drinks overnight.
A gentle, honest note — this is one nourishing food among many, not a complete meal on its own. Aayu Ahaar walks beside the doctor's care, never in its place.
