Bajra-vegetable khichdi — a warming pearl-millet one-pot rich in iron (2–5 years)

Pearl millet and moong cooked soft with vegetables and ghee — a warming, earthy khichdi that swaps in millet's extra iron and minerals.

Why am I making this?

Pearl millet (bajra, kshudradhanya) brings more iron and minerals than rice, and cooked soft with moong dal, vegetables and ghee it makes a warming, complete one-pot for cooler days. Soaking and cooking the bajra well is the chef's step for a soft, digestible khichdi. Bajra and moong are classical.

Ancient text

The small millets and green gram are valued as wholesome and sustaining.

The classical texts value the small millets (kshudradhanya) and green gram (mudga) as wholesome and sustaining; a bajra-moong khichdi follows that. The exact verse is being confirmed by our review panel before publication.

Modern research

Bajra is rich in iron and minerals and moong adds protein; millets and pulses are recommended for children.
