Bajra & vegetable savoury porridge — a warming, iron-rich breakfast (1–2 years)

A warm, savoury pearl-millet porridge with soft vegetables — an earthy breakfast that brings more iron and minerals than the usual bowl.

Why am I making this?

Pearl millet (bajra, kshudradhanya) brings more iron and minerals than rice, cooked soft with grated vegetables into a warm, savoury porridge for a cooler-morning breakfast; cooking the bajra well and smooth is the chef's step for an easy-to-digest bowl. Bajra is classical; the vegetables sit within the satmya principle.

Ancient text

The small millets are valued as wholesome and sustaining.

The classical texts value the small millets (kshudradhanya) as wholesome and sustaining; a bajra vegetable porridge follows that. The exact verse is being confirmed by our review panel before publication.

Modern research

Bajra is rich in iron and minerals and vegetables add vitamins and fibre; millets are recommended for children.
