Beetroot-apple juice — a ruby-red iron and energy sip (1–2 years)

A ruby-red iron-and-energy sip where apple's vitamin C boosts iron uptake — best in a small glass between meals, away from milk.

Why am I making this?

Iron and energy go hand in hand, and a beetroot-apple press is a cheerful way to support both. The classical texts value the sweet, nourishing roots and fruits that strengthen the body and build bala (बल), its vigour. Beetroot offers iron and folate, while apple's natural vitamin C — with a squeeze of lemon — helps the body actually absorb that iron. Kept pulp-in and small, and given between meals away from milk so the calcium doesn't compete, it's a gentle daily friend for energy.

Ancient text

Sweet, nourishing roots and fruits strengthen the body and build its vigour.

The classical texts value sweet, wholesome roots and fruits as strengthening, building the body's bala (vigour and strength). A beetroot-apple drink reflects that valuing of nourishing roots and ripe fruit for gentle strength.

Modern research

Beetroot supplies iron, folate and nitrates; pairing it with a vitamin-C food (apple, lemon) and keeping it away from milk improves non-haem iron absorption. Beeturia (pink urine/stool) is harmless.

Vitamin C enhances non-haem iron absorption; calcium inhibits it — well-established nutrition science. AAP policy on fruit juice (2017) — keep juice small and pulp-in, prefer whole fruit. ICMR-NIN, Indian Food Composition Tables (IFCT) 2017 — nutrient values for beetroot and apple.

How to make it

A small glass of beetroot and apple, pressed with the pulp kept in, is a beautiful ruby-red way to support iron and energy. The apple's natural vitamin C helps the body take up the iron — and the gorgeous colour is half the fun for a curious toddler.

What you'll need

  • ¼ small beetroot, steamed soft
  • ½ apple, peeled
  • A little water to dilute, a few drops of lemon

How to make it

  1. Blend the soft beetroot and apple together, keeping the pulp.
  2. Add a few drops of lemon and loosen with a little water.
  3. Serve fresh in a small open cup, between meals and away from milk.

A little goes a long way — keep the serving small, and don't worry if it tints her wee or stool pink.

2–5ya small undiluted glass with pulp
5y+add carrot for an ABC press, whole fruit still preferred

What every mother asks

Her wee turned pink — is that bad?
No — it's beeturia, a harmless tint from beetroot pigment that passes; it's not blood.
Why away from milk?
Calcium in milk competes with iron, so keep this between meals, not with a milk feed.
Isn't beetroot's nitrate a worry?
In normal food amounts for over-ones it's fine; just keep the serving small and don't store the drink for long.

A few honest notes

  • Steam beetroot soft and keep the serving small; serve fresh in an open cup, not stored for long (to limit nitrate build-up).
  • Give between meals, away from milk, for iron absorption.
  • Pink urine or stool is harmless. Introduce beetroot on its own first if new.
  • This is a gentle support, not a treatment — if your child seems pale or tired, or anaemia is suspected, consult your paediatrician.

Storage & make-ahead

Best made fresh and served straight away; don't store this drink for long, as nitrate-rich vegetable juices shouldn't be kept warm or for hours. Steam a little extra beetroot ahead and blend fresh each time.
