Paneer & soft rice mash — a gentle calcium-rich lunch for little bones (8–12 months)

Soft paneer melted through warm rice — easy, well-absorbed calcium and protein for a baby's growing bones.

Why am I making this?

Paneer is a fresh milk preparation — dugdha foods that the classical texts prize as wholesome and strength-giving (bala). It brings concentrated, well-absorbed calcium and protein, the two things a baby's bones need most, while soft rice (anna) carries it gently and ghrita adds energy. Mild and creamy, it suits a late-infancy digestion (satmya) from around eight months. A small bowl doing quiet, important work.

Ancient text

Milk and its fresh preparations are counted among the most wholesome, strengthening foods.

The classical texts repeatedly praise milk (dugdha) and its preparations (Ksheera varga) as wholesome and strength-giving (bala); soft paneer over rice follows that thinking for a baby. The exact verse is being confirmed by our review panel before publication.

Modern research

Paneer is a concentrated, well-absorbed source of calcium and casein protein for bone growth, and its soft texture suits late infancy when paired with rice for energy.

What every mother asks

When can a baby have paneer?
Small amounts of soft home paneer are usually fine from around 8 months — check with your paediatrician.
Is paneer hard to digest?
Fresh, soft paneer in small amounts is gentle; start small.
Is shop paneer okay?
Choose fresh, soft, low-salt paneer; home-made is best for babies.
What about dairy allergy?
If your child is dairy-allergic, this isn't suitable.

A few honest notes

  • Use fresh, soft paneer; avoid hard or salted paneer.
  • Dairy is a common allergen — introduce it on its own first.
  • Serve freshly made and lukewarm.
  • No added salt for babies under one year.

Storage & make-ahead

Best made fresh. Paneer dishes don't keep well for babies — make it to serve rather than storing.
