Sattu-jaggery cooler — the old summer drink that's secretly a glass of iron and protein (2–5 years)
The roasted-gram sattu drink grandmothers made for summer — cooling, gently sweet, and quietly packed with iron and protein.
Why am I making this?
Roasted gram (chana) sattu is a traditional powerhouse of iron and protein — cooling in summer and sustaining — and a finishing squeeze of lemon (vitamin C) lifts how much of that iron the body absorbs. An everyday classical drink doing real nutritional work: energy that lasts rather than a quick sugar spike.
Ancient text
Roasted grain preparations are valued as cooling, light and sustaining.
The classical texts value roasted grain flours (saktu) as light, cooling and sustaining; a sattu drink follows that directly. The exact verse is being confirmed by our review panel before publication.

Modern research
Roasted gram (sattu) is rich in iron and protein, and pairing it with vitamin C (lemon) aids absorption; pulses and iron-rich foods are recommended for children.

A few honest notes
- Whisk smooth and thin for young children.
- Introduce in small amounts (it's high in fibre).
- Keep it lightly sweet.
- Serve fresh.
Storage & make-ahead
Best fresh — sattu thickens on standing; whisk again with a splash of water.
