A soft, foldable dosa with veg tucked into the potato — the fun, hands-on lunch picky eaters reach for.

Why am I making this?

Dosa wins fussy eaters because it is fun — foldable, dippable, something a child can hold and explore, which lowers the resistance that makes mealtimes hard. The fermented rice-and-urad base is easy to digest and a complete protein, and the soft potato filling is the perfect place to fold in grated vegetables unnoticed. A playful, hands-on lunch that turns a reluctant eater into a willing one.

Ancient text

Light, well-fermented grain dishes are easy to digest and kindle a healthy appetite.

The classical scriptures describe light, well-prepared grain dishes as easy to digest and appetite-kindling — the thinking behind a soft, fermented dosa for a hesitant young eater.

Modern research

The fermented rice-and-urad dosa is easy to digest and forms a complete protein; the potato-and-vegetable filling adds energy, fibre and vitamins; and offering food in a fun, low-pressure, self-feeding format is an evidence-based way to encourage acceptance in picky eaters.

How to make it

What you'll need

  • 1/2 cup dosa batter (fermented rice and urad dal)
  • 1 small boiled potato, mashed
  • 2 tbsp finely grated carrot or peas (mixed into the potato)
  • 1 tsp ghee, a pinch of cumin and turmeric, a few curry leaves
  1. For the filling, temper the ghee with cumin, turmeric and curry leaves, add the mashed potato and grated vegetables, and mix to a soft, mild masala.
  2. Spread a small, thin dosa on a hot greased tawa and cook until soft and lightly golden (keep it soft, not crisp, for young children).
  3. Place a little filling in the centre, fold gently, and cut into small pieces.
  4. Serve warm with a mild curd or coconut chutney to dip.

What every mother asks

Isn't dosa just empty carbs?
The fermented rice-and-urad base is a complete protein and easy to digest, and the potato filling carries grated vegetables — so this version is balanced, not empty.
My child only eats plain dosa.
That is a fine start — then tuck a little potato-and-veg filling inside, increasing slowly. The fun, foldable format itself helps acceptance.
Can I use ready batter?
Yes — shop dosa batter works perfectly; just keep the dosa soft, not crisp, for young children.
Is potato healthy for kids?
Yes, in balance — boiled potato is a good energy source, and here it is the gentle carrier for hidden vegetables. Rotate with other fillings over time.

A few honest notes

  • Keep the dosa soft, not crisp, for young children, and cut into small pieces.
  • Contains urad dal; introduce a small amount first if new.
  • Keep the filling mild — no chilli; serve chutney without chilli for young children.
  • Keep salt modest; serve warm and freshly made.

Storage & make-ahead

Dosas are best made fresh and served warm. The potato filling keeps in the fridge for a day; make the dosa fresh and fill at serving. Batter keeps in the fridge for 2–3 days.
