Turmeric & vegetable khichdi — a warm everyday bowl for steady immunity (1–2 years)
The everyday khichdi, made a quiet immunity meal — turmeric, garlic and a rainbow of soft vegetables.
Why am I making this?
Immunity isn't built by one super-food but by steady, varied nourishment — and khichdi is the perfect daily vehicle. Turmeric brings its gentle anti-inflammatory warmth, a little garlic adds its protective compounds, and a mix of colourful vegetables delivers the vitamins a child's defences draw on. One easy, comforting pot that does quiet, daily good.
Ancient text
Turmeric is counted among the protective spices; moong-and-rice khichdi among the gentlest everyday foods.
The classical texts count turmeric among the spices long valued to protect and support the body — the reasoning behind a daily pinch of turmeric in a child's food.

Modern research
Curcumin in turmeric has well-studied anti-inflammatory properties; garlic contains compounds studied for immune support; and a variety of vegetables supplies vitamin A, vitamin C and zinc — nutrients the immune system relies on — in one easily digested meal.

How to make it
What you'll need
- 3 tbsp rice and 1.5 tbsp moong dal
- 3 tbsp mixed soft vegetables (carrot, beans, peas, pumpkin)
- 1/4 tsp turmeric, a pinch of cumin
- 1 tsp ghee
- A small piece of garlic (optional)
- Rinse the rice and dal. Pressure-cook with the chopped vegetables, turmeric, cumin, garlic and 1.5 cups water for 4 whistles, until very soft.
- Mash to your toddler's texture. Stir in the ghee while warm.
- Cool to lukewarm and serve. A squeeze of lemon at the end lifts the iron absorption.
How to feed it
| Texture | Soft, lightly mashed with small soft lumps |
| Quantity | 4–6 tablespoons as a full meal |
| Frequency | 3–4 times a week, easily a daily meal |
| Best time | Lunch, when digestion is strongest |
What's inside
Grow this recipe with your child
| 1–2 years | Soft and lightly mashed; mild garlic |
| 2–3 years | Chunkier, wider vegetable variety, a little curd on the side |
| 3–5 years | Add a tempering of cumin and curry leaves for flavour |

What every mother asks
Can I give turmeric daily?
Will khichdi really help immunity?
Is garlic okay for a toddler?
My toddler is bored of khichdi.
A few honest notes
- A small culinary pinch of turmeric is right — more is not better.
- Introduce new vegetables one at a time, with a 3-day gap, to spot any reaction.
- Keep salt modest for under-2s.
- Serve lukewarm and freshly made; repeated infections deserve a paediatrician's review.
Storage & make-ahead
Best served fresh and lukewarm. Keeps covered in the fridge for a few hours; warm gently with a little water and add fresh ghee at serving. Don't store overnight to reheat for a young toddler.
A gentle, honest note — this is one nourishing food among many, not a complete meal on its own. Aayu Ahaar walks beside the doctor's care, never in its place.
