Why am I making this?

When a child needs to gain weight, the answer is not more food — it is more nourishment per bite. Dates and almonds pack natural sugars, healthy fats, iron and protein into a small, happy mouthful, for the parent who keeps hearing “baby thoda kamzor lag raha hai.”

Ancient text

Dates are valued among the sweet fruits as strengthening and nourishing — the kind of food that helps a small body gain well.

Dates, almonds and ghee have a long place in Indian tradition as strengthening, weight-supporting foods for children and the recovering — small in quantity, rich in nourishment.

Modern research

Almonds are energy-dense, rich in healthy fats, protein and vitamin E; dates add natural sugars, iron and potassium — and for healthy weight gain, nutrient- and energy-dense foods are preferred over simply larger portions or added sugar.

How to make it

What you'll need

  • 8 soft dates, deseeded
  • 10 almonds, soaked and peeled
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • A pinch of cardamom (optional)
  1. Grind the soaked, peeled almonds to a fine powder — no whole pieces.
  2. Add the deseeded dates and blend to a sticky paste.
  3. Warm the ghee and mix it in with the cardamom until it comes together.
  4. Roll into small soft bites. For younger toddlers, flatten into a soft disc rather than a ball.

Please read the safety notes below before serving — always grind nuts finely and serve seated and supervised.

What every mother asks

Aren't nuts and dates a choking risk?
Yes, if whole — so never give whole nuts or whole dates under age 3. Grind the almonds finely and deseed and fully soften the dates, flatten into a disc for younger toddlers, and always serve seated and supervised.
What about nut allergy?
Introduce almonds in a tiny amount first to rule out a reaction. If there's a family history of nut allergy, speak to your paediatrician before giving them.
Will this make my child gain weight the right way?
It adds nourishment per bite rather than empty calories or sugar — but one or two bites a day is plenty. If you're worried about weight, your paediatrician is the right guide.
Can I skip the soaking?
Soaking and peeling makes almonds easier to grind smooth and to digest — worth the few minutes for a young child.

A few honest notes

  • Choking safety: never give whole nuts or whole dates to a child under 3. Always grind almonds finely, and deseed and soften dates fully.
  • Always offer with your child seated and supervised, never lying down or walking.
  • Introduce almonds in a tiny amount first to rule out any nut allergy; with a family history of nut allergy, speak to your paediatrician first.
  • One or two bites a day is plenty — these are rich.

Storage & make-ahead

Keep the bites in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Bring to room temperature before serving so they're soft, and make fresh in small batches rather than storing long.
