Amaranth (rajgira) & jaggery soft porridge — a sweet, iron-friendly way to end the day (1–2 years)

A warm, naturally sweet amaranth-and-milk porridge with a little jaggery — an iron-friendly, comforting bowl to end a busy day.

Why am I making this?

Iron-rich dinners do not all have to be savoury — for the toddler who leans sweet, this gives you an iron-friendly option that still feels like a treat. Amaranth is among the more iron- and calcium-carrying small grains, jaggery adds a little iron and natural sweetness, milk brings calcium and calories, and ghee makes it satisfying. Cooked porridge-soft, it suits the spoon-feeding age and the wind-down hour.

Ancient text

A thin, well-cooked grain gruel is light, strengthening and kind to the digestion of the young.

The classical texts praise soft grain gruels (peya / vilepi) as light, restorative and easy to digest, and count jaggery (guda) among the strengthening sweet foods. Amaranth is a newer grain placed within this same gentle-gruel tradition, softened with milk and ghee.

Modern research

Amaranth is one of the more iron- and calcium-rich small grains and is gluten-free, while jaggery contributes a little additional iron — making this a useful sweet route to iron for a child who tires of savoury dal-and-rice dinners.

ICMR-NIN, Indian Food Composition Tables (IFCT) 2017 — amaranth (rajgira), jaggery and milk composition. WHO / IAP complementary-feeding guidance — iron-rich foods for 1–2 year olds. NFHS-5 (2019–21): about 67% of Indian children aged 6–59 months are anaemic.

How to make it

When you want a warm, sweet dinner that still pulls its weight, this amaranth porridge is a quiet hero. Amaranth (rajgira / ramdana) is one of the more iron-rich little grains, a spoon of jaggery makes it naturally sweet and adds a little more iron, and milk turns it into a soft, comforting bowl to end the day. Cooked soft and porridge-smooth, it is easy for small spoons and easier on small tummies.

What you'll need

  • 2 tbsp amaranth (rajgira), or amaranth flour
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole milk for 1–2y)
  • 1 tsp grated jaggery (or to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp ghee
  • A pinch of cardamom (optional)
  • Water to cook

How to make it

  1. Dry-roast the amaranth lightly until it smells nutty (skip if using flour).
  2. Cook it with about 1/2 cup water on a low flame, stirring, until soft and porridge-like.
  3. Add the milk and cardamom and simmer gently a few more minutes.
  4. Turn off the heat, let it cool a little, then stir in the jaggery and ghee (adding jaggery off the boil keeps it gentle).
  5. Serve warm, loosened with a little extra milk if needed.

What every mother asks

Is jaggery okay for a toddler?
A small amount after one year is fine for flavour; keep it modest and never give honey or jaggery before one year.
Where do I find amaranth?
As rajgira / ramdana grain or flour in most Indian grocers; abroad, look for amaranth grain in health-food aisles.
Can I make it without milk?
Yes — cook it in water and finish with a nut milk or extra ghee if your child avoids dairy.
Is this enough iron on its own?
It is one helpful piece; keep iron-rich dinners regular and follow your doctor on any anaemia.

A few honest notes

  • No jaggery or honey before one year.
  • Serve warm, not hot; cook the grain fully soft to avoid any grittiness.
  • Introduce amaranth on its own first if it is new.
  • If your child is persistently pale, tired or not gaining well, please see your paediatrician — we walk beside the doctor's care, never in its place.

Storage & make-ahead

Best fresh and warm. Keeps covered in the fridge for up to a day; it sets thick on cooling, so reheat with extra milk or water and stir smooth before serving.
