Sahjan (moringa) dal with soft rice — a green-flecked bowl that loads up a child's immunity (2–5 years)

Tender drumstick and moringa leaves simmered into a soft dal over rice — one of the most nutrient-dense green bowls a mother can serve.

Why am I making this?

Drumstick and moringa leaves (sahjan, classically shigru) are exceptionally rich in vitamin C, vitamin A and iron, simmered into a protein-rich dal that's gentle and soft over rice — a frontline immunity bowl with real classical pedigree. Cooking the greens just until soft is the chef's step that keeps the colour and the nutrients. Scrape the soft drumstick pulp from the fibrous skin for little ones.

Ancient text

Drumstick is valued among the wholesome, beneficial vegetables.

The classical texts value shigru (drumstick/moringa) among beneficial vegetables (shaaka); a moringa dal follows that. The exact verse is being confirmed by our review panel before publication.

Modern research

Moringa and drumstick are rich in vitamin C, vitamin A and iron supporting immunity, and dal adds protein; greens and pulses are recommended for children.
