Chettinad sundal — warm chickpeas with coconut and lemon for the tired-looking child (2–5 years)

For the child who comes home tired and colourless after school — a warm Chettinad chickpea bowl carrying real iron and real protein.

Why am I making this?

One small katori of boiled chickpea sundal delivers something rare in a child snack: meaningful plant iron AND meaningful protein in the same bite. The lemon squeeze at the end is not decorative — vitamin C converts iron into a more absorbable form, roughly doubling how much reaches her bloodstream. Coconut adds gentle fats that help fat-soluble nutrient uptake; curry leaves and mustard seeds add micro-quantities of their own iron and calcium. This is the exact template of Chettinad nutrition — warm, dry, real ingredients doing several nutritional jobs at once. And critically, at 2–5 years, small children love the sensory play of picking up warm chickpeas one at a time.

Ancient text

Exact verse under confirmation by our review panel.

The classical texts hold chanaka (chickpea) among the rajika dhanya — the wholesome pulses — particularly for those needing strength and iron nourishment. Kaidali (curry leaves), narikela (coconut) and sarshapa (mustard) each carry their own classical warming and digestion-supporting qualities. When these come together in a tempered pulse dish, the classical concept of anupaana — the small additions that help the main food work better — is at play: the lemon and the tempering are not garnish, they are function.

Modern research

Chickpeas paired with vitamin C (lemon) significantly increase non-heme iron absorption, offering a plant-based iron boost in one snack bowl.

How to make it

In a Tamil Chettinad kitchen, sundal is what a mother makes when a child comes home from school hungry — boiled chickpeas tossed warm with grated coconut, a tiny tempering of mustard seeds and curry leaves, a squeeze of lemon. It arrives as a snack; it lands as one of the highest-iron protein bowls a small child eats in a week.

How to feed it

Portion3–4 tablespoons (a small katori)
Offerafter-school snack, warm not hot; or with lunch as a side
Howlet her pick up chickpeas by hand — it doubles her attention
Withsips of water; NOT with milk (dairy calcium blocks iron absorption in the same sitting)

What's inside

Iron
~2.2 mg per small bowl
significant plant iron, absorption doubled by lemon
Protein
~5 g per small bowl
substantial for a snack portion
Folate
naturally high in chickpea
supports growth and blood formation
Energy
~130 kcal per small bowl
sustained afternoon fuel

What every mother asks

Her palms look pale and I'm terrified she's anaemic.
You noticing is the important part — many mothers miss it entirely. Take her to the paediatrician for a simple haemoglobin test; that's the only real answer. Meanwhile, iron-rich snacks like this become part of the plan, not a substitute for it.
My mother-in-law says chickpeas are too heavy for a small child.
In excess they are; in a small katori they aren't. Chettinad kitchens have fed children chickpea sundal for centuries — the portion is what makes it right. Half a katori at snack time, chewed slowly, sits comfortably.
My child gets gas from chana.
Two things fix this: overnight soaking (which we do) and adequate cooking (pressure-cook until a chickpea squishes between your fingers). If gas persists, use kabuli chickpeas rather than black chana; they're gentler.
Won't chickpeas make her constipated?
The opposite — chickpeas are a fibre food. Constipation risk shows up when we forget the water; make sure she drinks water through the day.
Everyone else's child eats biscuits after school — why am I making this?
Because a biscuit gives her sugar and finishes there; this gives her iron, protein, folate, healthy fats, and finishes on a real ingredient. Both take five minutes to serve; only one is nourishment.

A few honest notes

  • Whole chickpeas are a choking risk under 2 — coarse-mash them for younger toddlers.
  • Soak chickpeas overnight (minimum 8 hours) and cook thoroughly — undercooked chickpeas are hard to digest.
  • Do not pair sundal with a glass of milk at the same sitting; dairy calcium significantly reduces iron absorption from pulses. Give milk an hour before or after.
  • For a child with confirmed iron deficiency, sundal is a daily supplement to the paediatrician's plan, not a replacement for prescribed iron therapy.

Storage & make-ahead

Best served warm within an hour of preparing. Leftover sundal refrigerates for up to 24 hours; warm gently on the stove before serving — do not microwave, it dries the coconut. The tempering can be prepared separately and mixed in fresh each time if you want to make a larger batch. Boiled chickpeas alone (unseasoned) refrigerate for 2 days.
